Shape Up with Pilates

Around the time of the First World War, a man named Joseph Pilates came up with a fitness regimen which he said was one that used the Contrology method. This method entailed the using the mind to get the muscles to work accordingly. Joseph Pilates had this fitness program named after him and called in Pilates, short for Pilates Method. Since he created the exercise program, Pilates has released two books discussing what the regimen is about and how to perform it.

Pilates Principles

Pilates is essentially based on the concept of Contrology. All the forms are focused on the muscles located at the center of the body. These work to support the spine and maintain the body's balance. The series of exercises teaches how to breathe properly and develop an awareness for each breath. Pilates helps strengthen the muscles of the torso so as to relieve backaches. In this exercise program, it is important to maintain proper spinal alignment and this trait is then practiced in other aspects of movement.

Pilates History

Pilates is a brainchild of a professional trainer named Joseph Pilates. His claim to fame came when he began being a a trainer to policemen as well as boxers right after the first World War. When he first settled in New York back in 1926, he set up a studio in the city and started developing a series of exercises that are based on precision and controlled movements. What was interesting about his studio was that it didn't teach repetitive exercise programs. Most of the forms did not require any type of exercise tool or weights. All that was needed was a padded mat and the students can easily perform the series.

For Pilates, the individual's mental health is complementary to his physical well-being. This is the essential detail from which all exercises are derived. All the forms focused on precision, focused breathing, proper spinal alignment and a smooth flow of movements. All these principles work towards enhancing the individual's awareness towards his body. They also helped produced toned, stronger and more flexible muscles. Pilates fitness programs also helped improve one's concentration.

Distinctive series of exercises

Along with the series of movements, Joseph Pilates developed five essential equipments that are to be used in the exercises. Originally, the forms entailed putting together forms that used mats and equipments. These days, however, the exercises are normally taught in separate sessions. This distinctive method of exercise works to enhance the body's strength so as to enable more freedom of movement which then translates to a healthier feeling. The body's powerhouse made up of the lower back, buttocks and abdomen are toned through the exercises.

What is so distinctive about Pilates is that its exercises uses the body as a form of weights.
